Getting to Glencoe

Glencoe, said to be Scotland's most famous and scenic glen, is a place where the moors meet the mountains and the mountains meet the sea. The village of Glencoe is on route A82 some two hours drive north of Glasgow International Airport. The town of Oban, the gateway to the Isles, lies to the south of Glencoe, and Fort William, the Outdoor Capital of the UK, some 14 miles to the north.

Glencoe is approximately two hours drive (about 90 miles) north of Glasgow on the main A82 trunk road through to the north west.

See Glencoe on Multimap.

Follow the M8 and cross the Erskine Bridge (no tolls anymore!) and then join the A82 out to Dumbarton and Loch Lomond. Turn left at Crianlarich and perhaps stop for a bite to eat or a real coffee in the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum. Follow the A82 over Rannoch Moor and all the way through the glen of Glencoe. Clachaig is signposted by the picturesque lochan in the heart of the glen and is located just half a mile from this junction on old road to Glencoe Village.

Glasgow Airport is conveniently located on the west side of Glasgow on the M8, just a couple of miles from the Erskine Bridge exit.

Typical journey time - 2 hours from Glasgow city centre.

From Edinburgh

Take the M9 to Stirling and leave at junction 10, signposted Callendar and A84. The A84 joins the A82 at Crianlarich (see above). Try stopping at Dobbies Garden centre for a bite to eat (on the A84 just off junction 10), or the many takeaways & cafes in Callendar. If arriving at Rosyth by Superfast Ferry (see our links page) from the continent, follow signs to Kincardine Bridge and this leads to the M9 just south of Stirling.

Edinburgh Airport is located on the west side of the city with easy access to the M9.

Typical journey times
- 2.5 hours from Edinburgh, 1.5 hours from Junction 10 on the M9, 2 hours from Rosyth.

From England

The main artery north is the M6 which becomes the A74(M) and then the M74 as it approaches the Central Belt. Approaching Glasgow you can choose between the M8 through Glasgow as above, or keep on motorways to the east and head for Junction 10 on the M9 as above. On an average day there's little difference in time or distance, though the M8 can be busy at rush hours and the 7 mile section of the A82 at the north end of Loch Lomond is a tad narrow for a trunk road!

Typical journey times - York/Leeds 6 hours, Manchester 5 hours.

Local taxi firms are available.

By Bus

The simplest way to reach the glen by public transport is to use the scheduled bus service operated by National Express between Glasgow, Fort William and Inverness. This stops at several locations in the glen.

By Train

Operated by Scotrail run between Glasgow and Fort William. Passengers can dismount at either Bridge of Orchy or Fort William stations, but they will need to catch one of the bus services mentioned above to complete the journey.

Finally, if you wish to use public transport to get to Glencoe, but then would like the convenience of your own car, then car hire is available from several motor dealers in Fort William. There are also a number of local taxi firms who will do everything from airport runs to meeting you on the West Highland Way.
